Philip B. Peters

Dr. Peters grew up in Spotsylvania and Richmond. He graduated from William & Mary in 1950 with a Bachelor of the Arts in economics and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and earned his DDS degree from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia in 1953.

Dr. Peters received his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Certification in 1956 from Virginia Commonwealth /Medical College of Virginia and founded the practice that would become COFS. Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, certified since 1960.

Bennett A. Malbon

Dr. Malbon grew up in Richmond. He graduated from Randolph Macon College in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in biology and earned his DDS degree from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia in1958. Dr. Malbon received his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Certification in 1961 from Virginia Commonwealth/Medical College of Virginia. Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, certified since 1963.

Dr. Green grew up in both Arlington and the Shenandoah Valley. He graduated from Roanoke College in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry and earned his DDS degree from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia in 1960. Dr. Green received his Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Certification in 1964 from Virginia Commonwealth /Medical College of Virginia. Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, certified since 1968.

Dr. Cuttino grew up in Sumter, South Carolina. He graduated from Clemson University in 1963 and earned his D.D.S. degree from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia in 1966. Dr. Cuttino received his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Certification in 1972 from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. Joined COFS in 1972. Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, certified since 1974.

Kimberly S. Swanson, D.D.S

Kimberly S. Swanson, D.D.S.

Dr. Swanson grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1981 and earned her D.D.S. degree from the University of Iowa in 1986. She did a General Practice Residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore from 1986-87. Dr. Swanson received her Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Certification in 1991 from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. In 1995 she joined COFS. In August, 2008 she retired.

James F. Nelson

James F. Nelson

Dr. James F. Nelson’s undergraduate degree is from Hampden Sydney in 1973 where he majored in chemistry and graduated Cum Laude. He was awarded his D.D.S. degree from Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia in 1977 and subsequently his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery certification in 1981. Later that same year he joined RVA’s first oral surgery practice (COFS). He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, certified since 1982. After 36 years in practice, Dr. Nelson retired in December 2017.

Thomas Eschenroeder, D.D.S

With an undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence University in 1978 class and a D.D.S. degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City (1985), Dr. Eschenroeder received his Oral Surgery certification from VCU/MCV. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, board certified since 1991. Dr. Eschenroeder retired in June 2021.

Dr. Murphy Oral Surgeon

Walter K. Murphy

Dr. Murphy was born in Augusta, Georgia, and he and his large family also lived in Martinsville and Germany. He earned a BA in Chemistry at University of Virginia in 1982, before attending the Medical College of Virginia, where he graduated with his DDS cum laude in 1986. After his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, at the Medical College of Virginia, he joined the practice of Drs. Clough and Wallace. He worked at their Mechanicsville office as well as other offices before branching-off and buying the Mechanicsville office. He joined COFS after more than 30 years of running his own successful practice in Hanover County, Virginia. Dr. Murphy retired March 30th 2023. He can now be found sailing on the Chesapeake and taking on restoration projects in his 1902 Fan house.
