To meet Dr. Sarraf is to be introduced to a personification of enthusiasm, energy, curiosity and intelligence all wrapped up in COFS’s newest oral surgeon.
Dr. Sarraf, son of a physician, emigrated with his family from his birthplace of Baghdad, Iraq at age 11. They lived in Tazewell County in western Virginia before settling in Chesterfield County when he was in 7th grade. He is a graduate of Thomas Dale High School in Chester.
While still in his undergraduate years at the University of Virginia, Dr. Sarraf was drawn to the medical field. Encouraged by his older sister, a VCU/MCV-trained dentist, he observed facial repair surgery by VCU oral surgeon, Dr. Omar Abubaker, and the rest, as they say, is history. “Most people don’t recognize the critical value of a person’s appearance,” he explains. “Oral surgeons take pride in our work, providing a much-needed and excellent service.”
He chose to become a COFS doctor for several reasons: “the work environment, especially the collegial aspect of this practice; the doctors here work as a team; there is a culture of working together and learning from each other. This practice is also a well-known group with an excellent reputation,” he continues with a smile.
What do I enjoy most about being an oral surgeon? “It’s tough to pick just one thing. My first response would be “everything!” But honestly, what I like most is the patient interaction, especially with kids. I like to listen to patients and hear their stories. It’s my best joy.”
Dr. Sarraf is married to Dr. Sara Sarraf, an OB-GYN with Virginia Women’s Center. They recently welcomed their third child.
