He has both his DDS and MD. He’s a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and has extensive experience with advanced dental implant rehabilitation and bone grafting. He has also been an assistant professor, an international volunteer, an author of textbook chapters and journal articles, and the recipient of numerous awards. Yet even with all his accomplishments, Dr. Agarwal is most known for his friendly, easy-going demeanor, and warm sense of humor.
Dr. Agarwal came to Commonwealth Oral and Facial Surgery (COFS) from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where he practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery as an assistant professor at the School of Dentistry, and as an attending surgeon at VCU Health System. A native of Northern Virginia, he attended VCU for his undergraduate education as part of the guaranteed admission dental school program. It was the first step toward fulfilling a longtime goal, as according to Dr. Agarwal, he’d “had [his] heart set on oral and maxillofacial surgery since [he] was in high school.”
After graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology and double minoring in business and chemistry, Dr. Agarwal continued his education at VCU School of Dentistry, where he earned his DDS degree. He then went on to complete a six-year combined program for medical school (MD) and oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and Parkland Memorial Hospital. During his residency training, he gained extensive experience with trigeminal nerve injury and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) – conditions that oral and maxillofacial surgeons see and treat often.
Dr. Agarwal is an active volunteer, for organizations including the Missions of Mercy, the Charlottesville Free Clinic, and Smile Bangladesh. His work in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2022 with the Smile Bangladesh team earned him the GIVE Award for Global Initiative for Volunteerism and Education from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation, and the Humanitarian Award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
When he’s not at COFS, Dr. Agarwal spends as much time as possible with his wife, Clara Bergeron, who is an accomplished prosthodontist, and their Brussels Griffon pup, Marcel. Dr. Agarwal loves spicy food and a good Texas brisket, and is always on the hunt for the best hidden gem restaurant in Richmond.
